Happier & Healthier, Not Miserable & Healthier

2013-04-04 12.24.04     Going on a diet is like a practice run or jump-start. You’ll quickly find out what foods you are willing to eliminate or substitute for a healthier alternative. Don’t give up something you love and your downgrade your quality of life. If you’re like me, your ultimate goal is to be HAPPY & healthy, not miserable & healthy. Some people may compensate an extra 30 minutes of cardio for that brownie they had. The trick is to find your balance and practice moderation in all things. What works for one person may not work for another.
I tried the raw food diet once. It was hard, but a great experience that taught me how to incorporate fresh foods and ultimately created a healthy habit of avoiding most processed foods. I swapped out my chips for fresh fruits and learned which healthy snacks worked for me. Some people dehydrate their own fruit to avoid preservatives from packaged goods. I simply don’t have the equipment or patience, so I resort to freeze dried bananas or mangos to satisfy the crunchy texture I crave. Trader Joe’s has a small selection of freeze dried fruits that are as low as $1.99.
No matter what fad diet you’re into, pick and choose what works for you to work towards a happier and healthier lifestyle, not just a temporary deprivation period. As your body changes, so will your needs and need to find a better balance. Your instincts will guide you in the right direction. It’s up to your conscience to follow it. From a Shakira perspective, your hips don’t lie. If you’re gaining a “muffin top,” it’s time to try something else.
